One of the most famous political events of history and Shakespeare's
greatest political tragedy becomes transformed by Lumina into a display
of Eastern sound and vision. Transported to Medieval Japan, Julius Caesar dramatizes
the fall of a great warrior Shogun and the scramble for power in a land
teetering on the edge of chaos. With the Code of Honor being the
highest standard in feudal Japan as it was in ancient Rome, CAESAR shows
a society where a warrior is judged by the noblest ideals - and can
experience the highest fall from grace. With some of the greatest verse
of the Bard's plays (" Cry Havoc! and let slip the dogs of war!",
"Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of
death but once." "When beggars die, there are no comets seen; The
heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes"), CAESAR is a
symphony for the ears; costumed in traditional Japanese court dress the
Lumina production will be a feast for the eyes.

Past Productions:
Romeo and Juliet 2008 - A
riveting revival of Lumina's hit Mods and Rockers Romeo and Juliet! Set in 1963
Brighton, England, Shakespeare's moving tragedy of star crossed lovers
is set to the beat of live rock music by THE BLACKJACKS with songs by
The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and others.
Cymbeline -
Shakespeare's romance of evil stepmothers, mistaken identity, lovable
rustics, and a spunky heroine named Imogen got a new setting in
Lumina's colorful and highly popular production. Transported by live
klezmer music and mid-century swing tunes, we followed a Hungarian
circus troupe in the 1930's dust bowl who must deal with conniving
sheriffs and bankers to make an (almost) honest living. True love,
fireworks, and magic prevail in the end!
Richard III - Shakespeare's
exciting tale takes a very modern look at power, corruption, and
villainy. In true Lumina form this was be an epic production full of
high drama and dark humor. Directed by Jillian Raye, Richard III was
set in a post-apocalypse future where people fight for survival and the
chance to rule over all. Bloody good fun!
As You Dig It! - A
revivial of Lumina's 2002 hit production. With apologizes to the Bard,
Lumina turned loose a madcap, high-voltage 60's version of the mythical
Arden Shakespeare's trials and triumphs producing As You Like It. With perod music
by the fabulous Blackjacks and hippies galore, AYDI! was an audience
favorite at the Round House Theatre.
King Lear - Set in
the last days of Imperialist Russia Shakespeare’s most epic and
explosive drama, included the gypsy story of Pushkin's “Ruslan and
Ludmilla” as a comic prelude to the tragic saga to follow. Complete
with gypsies, tiny fools, malicious plotting and selfless acts of
heroism, Lumina’s LEAR was a singular dramatic experience. Appearing in
the title role were two guest artists: John O’Conner (blue cast), noted
Shakespearean writer and director and Lumina’s David Minton (purple
cast). With live gypsy music and Russian dancing, Lumina brought its
trademark inventiveness to the stage at Olney Theatre Center for the
Arts.
A Midsummer Night's Dream
- Complete with tangoing fairies, pie-throwing lovers, and dancing
Amazons. A Midsummer Night's Dream was magical in its staging and
performances. Many of our long-time audiences felt this was Lumina's
most impressive production ever! Incredible set by Jim Porter and art
designs by Suzanne Hubbard. As always the costumes were brilliant. But
it was the acting that continually reaches new heights; this one set
the standard for Lumina shows for many years to come.
Macbeth - An utterly
absorbing and chilling production of this classic tragedy. Strangely
beautiful in its counterpoint to A MSND, "the Scottish Play" revealed
nuanced and moving performances by our Lumina Ensemble.
The Electric Cave - Lumina's
opener in the new Quest Series, The
Electric Cave followed ace girl reporter Joey Jinx as she
explored the weird and wonderful mystery of Vortex City, Wyoming.
So Deadly, Ex Machina - A tale
about A dame so fast, some gods so greedy, a detective so obsessed,
some apples so golden, and something...So Deadly.
The Wild Hunt - An imaginative
and delightful telling of stories of the hunt directed by Imogen Minton
Twelfth Night
Lumina's Fall production of "Twelfth Night" featured Karen Ashbrook
and her band playing "Old Time" American music. Many of our
actors advanced into leading roles for the first time. Many others
played major supporting
roles. The students enjoyed learning about American root music while
bringing
one of Shakespeare's most delightful comedies about mistaken identity
"down
home".
Nicholas Nickleby
What can be said about Lumina's Spring 2005 production of "Nicholas
Nickleby"? Audience members were heard to exclaim, "Marvelous!", "The
best play yet!", "Another winner for Lumina", "What talented actors!",
"I liked throwing muffins." It's true, NN was the most adventurous
undertaking to date for Lumina and, once again, another huge success.
Actors of all ages performed together to
bring this touching tale to life. Performing in the new Round House
Theatre in Silver Spring for the first time was a wonderful experience.
Students pushed themselves to their highest potential and soared
beyond. Jillian's magnificent costumes from Victorian England
helped pull the audience even
deeper into the story of Nicholas and his family.
The Illuminations
The first Summerstock 2005 production was also Lumina's first
experience in American University's Greenberg Theatre. "The
Illuminations", by Lumina's own David Minton, was the final
installment in The Paintings of Bog Trilogy. We welcomed back
many favorite characters and said good-bye to others. The sets and
costumes were fabulous. The two casts, over 30 students
each, performed with enthusiasm the dance numbers choreographed by
Jillian
Raye and Lumina interns Lizzie Albert & Elissa Heller.
Audience
members laughed at the many antics of the wild and crazy sisters, Mim
and
Sim Ushka, and the other wacky characters.
Catharsis, My Lovely
Lumina's second Summerstock production, "Catharsis, My Lovely", was another
masterpiece by David Minton. Catharsis, Performed at the Greenberg
Theatre, was a treat for everyone. Performed live on stage in the style
of "film noir" Catharsis left the audience cheering and wanting
more! The students, after just three weeks of rehearsal, took the
audience to Tangiers, Morocco in the 1940's to watch Odi C. Yooz try to
unravel the mystery that involved many characters from Greek mythology
and save the world from nasty evil doers. The entire play was performed
with black & white costumes, set and special make-up giving the
audience the feel of an old time movie and the experience of live
theatre.
