LITTLE DORRIT

In an exciting departure from its usual Shakespeare repertoire, Lumina Studio Theatre will produce the American premiere of Charles Dickens' LITTLE DORRIT. Ranking as the most popular novel with his own reading audience, LITTLE DORRIT follows the misadventures of one Dickens' most unusual heroines and her eccentric family as they rise from debt and beggary to brilliant wealth and status.

A work of satire on the shortcomings of the government and society of the period, LITTLE DORRIT exposes the hypocrisy of prison life in an English debtors' prison (where dickens' own father had been imprisoned) and where Amy Dorrit, the heroine, has spent her entire life caring for her imprisoned father. Dickens' amazing ability to create memorable personalities reaches new heights in the story's rogues gallery of great characters.

One of Lumina's most popular plays in its 10 year history was the ground-greaking produciton of NICHOLAS NICKLEBY by Dickens and LITTLE DORRIT was chosen as the perfect follow-up. Featuring Victorian costumes and style, combined with a dramatic, humourous, and uplifting story adapted by Lumin'as own playwright David Minton, LITTLE DORRIT will be another landmark Lumina event. As a special note, of all of Dickens' stories, this one was our founder's Jillian Raye's favorite and she picked it specially for this season.
