Summerstock Camps

Theatre Magic Camp

Theatre Magic Camp begins on June 24 and culminates in an exciting “storybook theatre” performance on June 28 for family and friends. Camp takes place at 633 Sligo Avenue. Young actors are at camp from 9-3 Monday-Friday where they make friends, play theatre games, learn beginners acting skills, and do theatrical crafts like mask-making. Camp involves some outdoor time each day. Young actors will not be expected to memorize lines. Aftercare is available for this camp - in your registration confirmation email, there will be an option to opt into aftercare. Email office@luminastudio.org for more details. Register before March 1 for an early-bird discount: before March 1, camp price is $400. After March 1, camp price rises to $450.

Folk Tale Camp

Folk Tale Camp rehearses and performs an original folk tale adaptation each summer! Camp begins on July 15 and culminates in an exciting performance for family and friends on July 25. Camp takes place at 633 Sligo Avenue. Young actors are at camp from 9-3 Monday-Friday where they make friends, play theatre games, learn acting skills, and rehearse an original play written in house by their directors. Plays often involve dancing and humor. Camp involves some outdoor time each day. Illuminations Camp

Mim, Sim, and the whole gang are back for the final episode of the Annushka Twilight trilogy! Except this time...they suffer from amnesia, existing as changed forms of themselves in one of the many worlds that have opened up between paintings. Dashing between the Grey World, the Glimmer World, the Dark World, a familiar cast of zany characters hurtles towards a truly epic conclusion! Camp begins on June 24 and culminates in performances on July 12 & 13. Camp takes place at 633 Sligo Avenue for the first two weeks and the Silver Spring Black Box for the third week and performances. Young actors are at camp from 9-3 Monday-Friday where they make friends, play theatre games, learn acting skills, learn dances, and rehearse an original play. Quest Theatre Camp: Seven Wonders

A ragtag crew of intrepid voyagers take to the seas, searching the Seven Wonders of the world for a magical cure (prescribed by the mysterious Gold Dust Woman) to save their friend! Set exclusively to the rocking tunes of Fleetwood Mac, this is a rollicking adventure you won’t want to miss! Camp begins on July 15 and culminates in performances on August 2 & 3. Summerstock Camps

Directing Camp

Have an idea for a play and want to learn how to direct? Are you a young actor who would like to hone a different set of theatre skills? Well, this is the camp for you! Aspiring directors will work with seasoned directors to learn about different styles of theater, how to approach a script, how to run rehearsals, lighting and sound design basics, and much more. Aspiring directors will get the chance to direct each other in scenes or short pieces throughout the week, in addition to playing the occasional theater game. Camp begins on July 1 and ends on July 5 - this is a 4-day extended workshop camp. There is no camp on July 4th. This camp takes place at 633 Sligo Avenue and will be Monday-Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. Register before March 1 for an early-bird discount: before March 1, camp price is $350. After March 1, camp price rises to $400.

Mainstage

The Players

Lumina’s youngest actors begin their exciting theatre experience as Players. They work with speech creatively, learn to develop basic characters, and practice the fundamentals of acting. Actors develop their verbal fluency in classic theatre using the techniques developed by Rudolph Steiner, and are given instruction in verbal and physical theatre styles and techniques. Players rehearse weekly with their age group, attend occasional weekend rehearsals with the Classics and Guild, and perform in the mainstage production as a cohesive, multi-age cast. All Players have speaking roles in the production and are expected to memorize and practice lines and execute basic stage directions.

The Classics

This rehearsal group continues to hone their acting skills and deepen their knowledge of dramatic literature and techniques for creating natural and stylized characters. Working with more challenging roles, the actors continue to practice vocal techniques for presentation. Young actors are introduced to verse technique, imagery, and text analysis as a way of creating vibrant and expressive characters for the production. Classics rehearse weekly with their age group, attend occasional weekend rehearsals with the Players and Guild, and perform in the mainstage production as a cohesive, multi-age cast.

The Guild

Guild actors learn and practice advanced Steiner and Linklater speech techniques. In addition, basic Chekhov methods for building character through physicalization are introduced. Each member of this select group of actors has demonstrated exceptional dedication and ability in performing, and a desire to expand their acting talents and explore the directorial side of theatre. Guild members rehearse weekly with their age group, attend occasional weekend rehearsals with the Players and Guild, and perform in the mainstage production as a cohesive, multi-age cast.

Advanced

The Ensemble

The Ensemble is a group of older high school aged actors who have participated for several sessions in the Guild. Ensemble actors perform the works of contemporary playwrights (such as Jean Giraudoux, Christopher Fry, Caryl Churchill, Samuel Beckett, Karen Hartman, to name a few) as well as original premiere works. Within rehearsals, the actors also discuss and practice audition techniques and develop their own head shots and acting resumes. The Ensemble culminates with a full production in the spring.
