Folk Tale Camp: The Phantom Tollbooth

Folk Tale Camp rehearses and performs an original folk tale adaptation each summer! Camp takes place from July 17-July 28 at 633 Sligo Avenue and culminates in an outdoor performance on July 27! Young actors are at camp from 9-3 Monday-Friday where they make friends, play theatre games, learn acting skills, and rehearse an original play written in house by their directors. Plays often involve dancing and humor. Camp involves some outdoor time each day. Aftercare available from 3pm-5pm – you will receive details in your registration confirmation email.

Summertime Players: The Landscape of Haywain

Last Summer, Paintings came to life in an old spooky castle in The Portrait of An Ushka Twilight, but thanks to the quick work of groovy sisters Mim and Sim and all their friends, evil was vanquished and all was well! UNTIL… our heroes get sucked into another painting, and this time the Devil is hosting an all star singing contest in The Landscape of Haywain! Camp takes place from June 26-July 14 at 633 Sligo Avenue and culminates in a performance on July 13 at the Silver Spring Black Box. Young actors are at camp from 9-3 Monday-Friday where they make friends, play theatre games, learn acting skills, and rehearse an original play written in house by their directors. In the dead of night, who may haunt the hallowed halls of Eelation (The Aquarium of Our Times) but the shimmering, the magnificent, the delicious... SUGAR WHALE! Lumina’s famous Roman Noir trilogy comes to a close in the Last Train to Byzantium, with a wacky cast of characters from history and myth in a B-movie style thriller! Mainstage

The Players

REGISTER FOR LUMINA'S FALL MAINSTAGE SHOW, AS YOU DIG IT! The Players will meet at the Silver Spring Black Box (8641 Colesville Rd) on Wednesdays OR Thursdays from 4:30-6:00pm, depending on which of the 2 casts they are assigned to. Mark your weekday requirements on the form, and you will receive an email with your cast assignment and more details within 3 weeks of registration. Rehearsals begin on September 6 & 7, 2023. Performances take place the weekends of December 9-10 and December 15-16, 2023. Lumina’s youngest actors begin their exciting theatre experience as Players. They work with speech creatively, learn to develop basic characters, and practice the fundamentals of acting. Actors develop their verbal fluency in classic theatre using the techniques developed by Rudolph Steiner, and are given instruction in verbal and physical theatre styles and techniques. Players rehearse weekly with their age group, attend occasional weekend rehearsals with the Classics and Guild, and perform in the mainstage production as a cohesive, multi-age cast. All Players have speaking roles in the production and are expected to memorize and practice lines and execute basic stage directions.

The Classics

REGISTER FOR LUMINA'S FALL MAINSTAGE SHOW, AS YOU DIG IT! The Classics will meet at 633 Sligo Avenue on Wednesdays OR Thursdays from 4:30-6:30pm, depending on which of the 2 casts they are assigned to. Mark your weekday requirements on the form, and you will receive an email with your cast assignment and more details within 3 weeks of registration. Rehearsals begin on September 6 & 7, 2023. Performances take place the weekends of December 9-10 and December 15-16, 2023. This rehearsal group continues to hone their acting skills and deepen their knowledge of dramatic literature and techniques for creating natural and stylized characters. Working with more challenging roles, the actors continue to practice vocal techniques for presentation. Young actors are introduced to verse technique, imagery, and text analysis as a way of creating vibrant and expressive characters for the production. Classics rehearse weekly with their age group, attend occasional weekend rehearsals with the Players and Guild, and perform in the mainstage production as a cohesive, multi-age cast.

The Guild

REGISTER FOR LUMINA'S FALL MAINSTAGE SHOW, AS YOU DIG IT! The Guild meets on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30pm at 633 Sligo Avenue. Rehearsals begin on September 5, 2023. Performances take place the weekends of December 9-10 and December 15-16, 2023. Guild actors learn and practice advanced Steiner and Linklater speech techniques. In addition, basic Chekhov methods for building character through physicalization are introduced. Each member of this select group of actors has demonstrated exceptional dedication and ability in performing, and a desire to expand their acting talents and explore the directorial side of theatre. Guild members rehearse weekly with their age group, attend occasional weekend rehearsals with the Players and Guild, and perform in the mainstage production as a cohesive, multi-age cast.

Advanced

The Ensemble

The Ensemble is a group of older high school aged actors who have participated for several sessions in the Guild. Ensemble actors perform the works of contemporary playwrights (such as Jean Giraudoux, Christopher Fry, Caryl Churchill, Samuel Beckett, Karen Hartman, to name a few) as well as original premiere works. Within rehearsals, the actors also discuss and practice audition techniques and develop their own head shots and acting resumes. The Ensemble culminates with a full production in the spring.
